Serious Sam 3: BFE is an intense first person shooting game that throws an inordinate number of enemies at the player. This game is technically the fourth Serious Sam game. The player assumes the role of the title character. This game takes place before the events in the previous Serious Sam games.

Serious Sam 3 is almost entirely about gunning down massive swarms of enemies. The game gives the player a huge arsenal of weapons to select from. Many guns from the earlier Serious Sam games are included in this game. Weapons such as rockets are often overpowered in first person shooting games. In Serious Sam they are less effective than machine weapons because of how many enemies appear on each map. Each stage throws what seems like thousands of enemies at the player. The enemies in this game fly, jump, charge and use defensive maneuvers. The game's most iconic enemy type will run at the player while screaming and then explode.

This game only has ten levels, but the stages are quite long and challenging. The entire game takes place in modern day Egypt. The environments are beautifully designed, but the game's textures and map designs can feel repetitive after a while. The game's controls are good, but Serious Sam 3's design isn't as finessed as most modern shooters. The player can use iron sights and scopes to target enemies with precision, but it isn't necessary to do this most of the time. The game also has an arbitrary checkpoint system that saves at some rather inconvenient times. Players may need to reload older saves because their game saved at a moment where the player was about to die.

Serious Sam 3 doesn't have any puzzles. A few stages do require some exploration. There is little incentive to replay the single player game more than once because of how linear the game is. This game was designed purely for fans of arcade shooting games. The older Serious Sam games had a humorous tone to them, but Serious Sam 3 attempts to be a darker and more mature shooting game. Serious Sam 3's tone doesn't work because the plot is intrinsically silly.

The game's visuals and sound are decent, but this game wasn't designed to compete with modern first person shooting games like Halo. Serious Sam 3 is more of a throwback to earlier shooting games. The player has to conserve ammunition and collect strategically placed health items to survive. This game becomes somewhat repetitive near the end because many of the enemy encounters are just recycled. Serious Sam 3 emphasizes quantity over quality, but the game still manages to be addictive and challenging.
